In 2002...
Rotarians, led by Judy Witt, then the president of Bloomington Rotary Club, began envisioning a facility to provide teachers in Southern Indiana with free school supplies, after they saw an article about Crayons to Computers, a free store for teachers in Cincinnati, OH, in the Herald-Times.
Since then, the Rotary Clubs of Bloomington (Bloomington, Bloomington North, and Bloomington Sunrise) as well as individuals and businesses have generously contributed time, product, and funds to the Teachers Warehouse Project.
On Thursday, February 26, 2004, Teachers Warehouse celebrated its "christening." Individuals and businesses were invited to tour the newly acquired store and warehouse facilities.
August 6, 2004, marked the official grand opening of Teachers Warehouse. Since the February christening, the store had been painted, stocked, and organized; signs by local elementary school artists had been hung; a part-time staff person had been hired; and merchandise had poured in to fill the warehouse space.
The first official shopping day for Teachers Warehouse occurred August 14, 2004 and 10 teachers shopped that day. By the start of school August 25, over 55 teachers in the Monroe County area had been served.
